Since 1991, Centerforce staff have offered a five day, comprehensive training for inmates interested in becoming peer HIV educators. Centerforce staff and community experts are invited to facilitate components of the training. Approximately 20 inmates successfully complete this training every 6 months (40 per year) at San Quentin State Prison. Centerforce also facilitates this training at the Central California Women’s Facility (CCWF) in Chowchilla, CA. For ordering information, see below.

The goal of this peer educator training is to create a pool of inmate peer educators to conduct the various HIV prevention programs in the prison. This program was formally evaluated and peer educators were found to be as effective as a professional HIV educator. We also found that inmates preferred peer educators.
