  • According to the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS, as of the end of 2001, the following trends of the worldwide epidemic of HIV are evident:
  • Today, 40 million people are estimated to be living with HIV/AIDS. Of these, 37.2 million are adults. 17.6 million are women, and 2.7 million are children under 15.
  • During 2001, AIDS caused the deaths of an estimated 3 million people, including 1.1 million women and 580,000 children under 15.
  • Women are becoming increasingly affected by HIV. Approximately 48%, or 17.6 million, of the 37.2 million adults living with HIV or AIDS worldwide are women.
